Depart from me, I never knew you. Stay with me; I don’t know who I am. Every night I die and go to dreamland; Every day I’m born a different man. Tick tock, stop the clock. When did my hair turn gray? Every mirror reveals a face The same as yesterday. Comfort me when I reach out for comfort; Flee from me when I wish us apart. Trust that I’m sincere in my confusion; I’m sure that I meant something at the start. Oh no, stop or go— If go, then which way? I don’t recall remembering; Can’t tell my yea from nay. Conjure me a world that stands to reason. Reasons are as plentiful as sand; Logic’s like a dog with many masters, Who’ll bark and bite at anyone’s command. This, that, imagine that, Be that what it may. Facts are fictions ratified Until they pass away. Write for me a story I can live by— A script we share where you supply the lines. Every time I try and plot an answer, Everything and nothing comes to mind. Words, dreams, real things, Words I can convey, All my words are secondhand; I’ve nothing real to say. Knead me into someone worth the needing; Shape me into something with a form. Make of me a nest within your branches; I’m lost just like a leaf within a storm. Happy, sad, raving mad— Call the tune; I’ll play. Shall I die, or shall we dance? Simply show the way. Love me into someone worth the loving. Love I know is real from fear of loss. I’m sorry for my lack of understanding; I’m tired and can no longer bear the cost.
